Three years ago.  That’s how long it’s been since the kids and I visited my cousin in Ft. Lauderdale, and even then, it was only for a night before we left for a month long trip to Europe.  The kids were almost 3 and 4 — they were young.  But they have never stopped talking about “Jennifer with the drums” – NEVER!  So here we are again, our third stop of this trip and the drums are here.  I did take a video of them playing today and I am going to work on posting that so you can all experience the beautiful music they can play, but in the meantime . . . here’s some pictures!

I have decided to do a daily (crossing fingers that I can keep this going) feature of some of the kids photos from this trip.  I keep two cameras with me including one that I allow the kids to take pictures with as they wish.    Most of their pictures are, of course, abstract, but for the first time, some are getting really interesting.  So once a day I’m going to feature a picture by one of them.  Most of the time I won’t write much, just a caption on the image.  So here are some of Cade’s for the first day.  Enjoy!

My Toaster Oven – road trip essentials

August22

When considering road tripping there are a few ESSENTIALS that are necessary to make it happen and then some WANTS that make it much more pleasurable.  Note: bear in mind that my road tripping over the last 6 years has always involved two little ones and that definitely plays a part in this.

First, of course, you must have a RELIABLE and COMFORTABLE car for whatever your situation is.  We travel in a toaster oven!  I have had this phenomenal car for 4 years now and LOVE it.  When the thought of having to get another car comes up, I get extremely sad!

Not only do you have to factor the cost of fuel into your trip budget, but car maintenance.  Obviously, if you are putting thousands of miles on your car every year with roadtrips (this trip along will put 3K+ on my lil toaster and it’s my third roadtrip this year,) you have additional maintenance or at least it significantly speeds on your maintenance rotation.  Instead of changing your oil every 3-5 months on day to day driving, you are having to change your oil every month for those months you are traveling.  So don’t forget this step it’s CRITICAL!

Second, a map is certainly a necessity for any roadtrip.  Even if you are only going an hour away for a weekend getaway, you need direction.  We’ve all heard the stereotypes on men and women drivers and asking for drivers.  Well, I recommend avoiding all that and planning in advance.  While for the most part I’ve a laid back traveller in that I don’t plan my overnight stops or even the date of arrival, I just take it as it comes.  I do plan my route and over plan my route and have alternate routes just in case.  Back in the day, this was done with AAA TripTik and I still use those today.

BUT, as I mentioned earlier, there are some “luxury” items that I highly recommend, one of those is a GPS.  I finally broke down and purchased one earlier this year for my trip to Colorado.  It is FABULOUS.  Not only am I guided step by step or rather turn by turn on my route and given advance warning of traffic (and re routed when possible,) it also makes finding food, lodging and fun stuff soo, soo easy.  Definitely worth the $200 investment.

Third, if you are like me, you would much rather spend your $$$ on experiences than fast food on the trip and especially when you are traveling with kids and they are ALWAYS hungry, you should keep snacks and if you can meal type food in the car and handy.  I keep a crate of food in the front seat next to me so I can grab and keep going literally.

crate of foodWhile everyone’s staples may be different, for me and my two munchkins here are our must haves: bread and peanut butter for sandwiches, chips (that I limit to meals only,) granola bars for snack time (and I keep three types of granola bars handy, one including chocolate chips for when one of us gets a sweet tooth,) and cereal for breakfast and/or snack time. Before every long trip, each child also gets to choose one package of cookies, one package of juice boxes and one other snacky item that is NOT candy.

You will notice that none of our food must be kept cold.  While we do keep a small cooler in the car for some occasional specialty items and drinks, I personally HATE having to deal with cooler maintenance so if I have time at a stop I will feel it with ice and put some of our drinks in it, but mostly it is stocked on the first day and then I ignore it until I think about getting it ready again.  And I don’t want anything to spoil.  As a side note, my grandmother blessed me with a container of homemade pimento cheese for this leg of the trip, so I have been very vigilant on maintaining my cooler and have even enjoyed 2 pimento cheese sandwiches today! YUM!

So these are my TOP THREE must haves for a successful road trip.  I will speak more of some more luxury items and recommended items as we move along this trip.

We Trained Dolphins – Sea World – Orlando

August19

I have always wanted to swim with dolphins.  It’s one of the few things in life that I have wanted to do and haven’t had the opportunity yet. Since I had kids, I determined to wait until they were old enough –  they still aren’t old enough.  So I took the second best option while we were at Sea World and we did the train the dolphin experience.  It was AWESOME!

The first 30 minutes were walking behind the scenes of the dolphin show and seeing the rescued animals (manatees, turtles, etc.) and the isolated dolphins (for training or other reasons as they don’t have rescued dolphins due to health issues.)  It was fascinating to me, but the kids . . . not so much.

Anyways, no words I could say could explain this experience better than the following pictures – enjoy!

They were ready to greet us as soon as we got there! Right after we saw the back side of the show we went to meet our dolphins, these two were ready to say HI!

Up close and personal - Oscar and ?? (I know, bad trainer for forgetting a name.)

Jump and splash the trainer time - we were all drenched!

Oh yea, these were their "treats" when they did good - YUCK!

Now this was AMAZING and he loved it too - see his SMILE!

Afterwards, the dolphin show had us enraptured!

Of course, we had to take a picture with the trainers after the show!

No one said they wanted to be a dolphin trainer or swim with dolphins afterwards, but we were all amazed at how smart our dolphins were and how quickly they picked up the things that we taught them.  NEXT YEAR – we will all be old enough to swim with dolphins – woo hoo!

On the road again . . .

August18

We are leaving now, headed toward Orlando.  Anticipate a minimum of 6 hours on the road today, but hoping to get closer to 8.  Honda Element

Wow, where to start?  I always feel like what should be said here should define me, how I feel about myself and how I live my life . . . and frankly how do you put all that in words that anyone but you could fully comprehend the meaning???

So I’ll be brief. Mother, ex-wife, daughter, sister, renter, homemaker, laundress, boss, friend, business owner and taxi driver – these are the hats I wear on a daily basis in my life.  I wouldn’t give up a single one, well, except maybe the “ex” part, but that’s a story for another day.

My life revolves around my two children who are with me all the time and my job because, let’s face it, I’ve got bills to pay.  I LOVE my life.  I am so blessed. But that’s not to say it isn’t VERY hard sometimes.  I’ve learned to count my blessings daily if not momentarily and am really looking forward to this new “blogging” chapter of my life, even if it is just an outlet for myself.

Have questions . . . ask?  I don’t hold back – ever, especially in this my “personal” space.
