Traditions, some are outdated or whimsical where as others are more practical. My family has a tradition of wrapping gifts in material remnants, homemade bags, and pillowcases rather than store bought wrapping paper or gift bags.It began one birthday several years ago when I was shopping for a gift for my son and remembered everything for the party but the wrapping paper. In a time crunch, I just used what was on hand to wrap his gifts, his favorite Transformer pillowcase and a couple of blue quilting squares tied up with my daughters ponytail holders. My husband praised me for my quick, creative thinking, asking if we could do it this way more often. That year for Christmas my children and I made some bags using cloth remnants and old work shirts after we had exhausted our selection of pillowcases. We realized everyone was able to enjoy the holiday more, clean up was much easier and the house got back to normal levels of sanity much quicker. Through the years we have slowly added to our collection of bags, quilting squares and ribbons. I love that we are teaching our children how to reduce and reuse, and my husband loves that we are saving money.
